Talking Politics Over Dinner

If COVID-19 has done nothing else it has well and truly brought home to all of us just how much our lives are affected by politics.

Everything we do, or more to the point want to do right now, can be, and is affected by politics.

Yet it’s a subject rarely discussed.  Most of us don’t engage.  Don’t actually know the policies of whatever party we choose to follow and vote for are.  Don’t know who the leaders and position holders within the major parties are, and probably wouldn’t know them if you walked past them in the street.  Many of us also don’t know or understand what’s handled by the different levels of government, local, State and Federal.

It’s time to bring politics back into our daily lives.  To remember that it’s absolutely ok to have differences of opinion.  Know that it’s also ok to inform yourself and to feel comfortable about engaging in some good old fashioned healthy debates.

We’re fortunate here in Australia to have a vote, and we should be using that very great privilege wisely.

Oh, and cards on the table up front.  I’m not a fan of any of the major parties and currently not a member of any political party.  I care deeply about the environment and the preservation of the unique flora & fauna we are so fortunate to have here in Australia.  I believe that there are some fundamental things that everyone should have the right and access to, and have some fairly strongly held views around what government is there to do.

COVID-19 is far and away the focus at the moment, so that’s likely to influence the commentary here for now.
